As a digital nomad traveling on a U.S. passport, I have a lot of privilege when it comes to crossing borders. But there are a few countries that make it difficult for U.S. citizens to visit — even as a tourist — and require Americans to apply for a visa, either online or upon arrival.
In some cases, it’s a reciprocal measure: because the U.S. makes it so difficult for citizens of many nationalities to enter the county, it’s only fair for those countries to require us to jump through some hoops in return.
Bolivia is one of those countries. Even though Australians, Canadians, and many Europeans can enter visa-free for 90 days, Americans are required to apply for a tourist visa, which costs $160 USD and is valid for up to 30 days per entry.
Here’s what the process was like for me, and why you should considering visiting Bolivia on your next trip to South America.
